What is an Otherkin or Therian?
Otherkin and Therians are individuals that believe that they are, in some way, not entirely human. Theories on how this is range from Past life souls/imprints or something, to two souls inhabiting one body, and many others.
The term "Therian" often represents those who identify as a type that does exist or has existed on this earth and within this realm (such as wolves, lions, bears, gorillas, etc)
"Otherkin" is often used as either an umbrella term for both types and/or a term for those who identify as a creature/animal who may not have existed in this world or those only found in myth (fairies, Dragons, demons, angels, etc).
Each individual will have their preferred term, however and they are often interchanged.
What is a shift?
A shift is a period of time in which the Otherkin/Therian individual -feels- like their kinside/therio-type.
A shift can range from phantom limbs (such as one perceiving that they have wings, pointed ears or a tail), to mental shifts in which they believe their state of mind changes and represents that of their type.
One may also experience Astral Shifts, in which they might project as their type and Dream Shifts in which they are their type in their dreams.
What is a Phantom Limb?
It is the perception of a limb, or body part that does not actually exist on your physical body.
In the medical/science field, it's often felt if an individual looses a limb. They might still feel like it's there, because the nerves for that limb still exist in the brain.
A phantom limb in relation to Therians and Otherkin is a limb that one has never had in this physical life, but may have had at one time (another lifetime?) or does have on their spiritual/astral/metaphysical body.
- Ex: If one identifies as a Dragon, they might perceive scales, wings, a tail, horns or various spikes on their body. If one identifies as a dog, they might perceive a muzzle, pointed ears, fur and/or a tail. While not all are actually "limbs" (arm, leg, tail, etc) they are considered "phantom limbs" or even a Phantom "shift".
If you're trying to find the definition of "Phantom limb" in a dictionary, the most likely definition will be of the medical sort. Instead, in relation to otherkin and therians, Look for the definition of both words separately and combine them.
